If God wants us to genuinely pray and pour out our needs and concerns, why do we repeat the Lord's Prayer?

To be sure, God wants us to be genuine when we pray. Sometimes the Lord's Prayer is used (both privately and corporately) in such a rote fashion that we are not really being sincere when we recite it. The Lord's Prayer is meant by Jesus as a template or pattern for prayer, rather than something merely repeated without thinking. That's why we don't recite the Lord's Prayer at UPC every Sunday.

However, reciting the prayer is a good way to learn to pray. In my opinion, it has value as a prayer in itself, as long as one really thinks about what he or she is saying. After all, Jesus did say to the disciples, "When you pray, say..." (rather than "When you pray, say something like this..."). I think the Lord's Prayer can be a valuable teaching tool, especially for children who might not know what to say to God. And often, when I'm feeling dry and not in a prayerful mood, the Lord's Prayer helps me connect with God. At such times I'm surprised to see how my heart warms as I say the prayer to God.

Incidentally, we have begun a monthly prayer meeting at UPC. We meet on the first Sunday (6:00 p.m. in the Worship Center) and the first Wednesday (7:00 p.m. in the Modular building) of each month for an hour of corporate prayer. We are currently using the Lord's Prayer as a thematic guide for each month's prayer meeting. Come join us as we lay before our Father in heaven our needs, concerns, praises, and thanksgivings.
