Vision Sunday: This Sunday 9 AM to 12 Noon

September 14, 2011 | (0) Comments

As I post this, it's September 14, 2011. Tomorrow UPC becomes a twenty-year old church. The first worship service of University Presbyterian Church took place on September 15, 1991. Rev. Mark Bates, who had been on the staff of Orangewood Presbyterian in Maitland, had moved out to East Orlando with his wife and kids to plant UPC. He started with a home Bible study. On September 15, 253 people showed up for worship. Mark labored faithfully here for sixteen of the past twenty years.  I have been privileged to follow in his footsteps.

Like any young man or woman at twenty, University Presbyterian Church is looking at a world of opportunity and challenge before her. This Sunday is Vision Sunday, when we celebrate the past and look ahead to these opportunities and challenges. Besides the music, drama, and other entertaining features of the morning, I will spell out the vision of UPC. The elders and I have crafted a new vision statement that calls UPC to a greater-than-ever connection with our East Orlando community and its needs.

If you're a member or regular attender of UPC, you really shouldn't miss Vision Sunday. If you're a newcomer, you really shouldn't miss Vision Sunday. It'll be the best Sunday of the year to "get," in one sitting, the DNA of our church. Come at 9:00 a.m. and stay the entire morning. The program looks like this:

  • At 9:00 a.m., you'll enjoy a one-man play called "Nehemiah" in the Worship Center. This is fitting since we've been studying the book of Nehemiah together for over a month. John Archer, a former member of UPC and professional actor, plays Nehemiah and will help you understand how important prayer and trusting in God were to this key Old Testament figure.
  • At 10:15, we'll break for refreshments in the Commons.
  • At 10:45, we'll re-gather in the Worship Center for some inspiring music, a movie created by our Media Team, and my presentation of UPC's mission, vision, and values.

I hope you'll join us for UPC's twentieth birthday celebration. You wouldn't miss your teenager's transition into adulthood, now would you?
